Historical Fiction writer, Steve Linstrom, will discuss how history and storytelling combine to create the Historical Fiction Novel. He will demonstrate how his first novel, The Last Ram, was gradually built around the hunt for the last Audubon Bighorn Sheep in existence in the South Dakota Badlands in 1904 and, then, how he came to set a companion novel, Murder Trial of the Last Lakota Warrior, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, when it was the divorce capital of the nation in 1892. Steve will outline the research steps, story creation process, and the challenges of bringing history and fiction together.
Steve received his Master’s degree in Literature from Minnesota State, Mankato, and had two novels and several short stories published between 2013-14. He taught writing at Southwest Minnesota State University for several years before retiring in St. Paul. Steve is active in the Westside St. Paul Writers Group and has reestablished his writing efforts, recently publishing a new story in the Talking Stick Literary Journal and self-publishing a book of short stories and poetry.

The pot stands at $176.00++.Ticket donations are: $1 for 1 ticket; $2 for 3 tickets; $3 for 5 tickets; $5 for 10 tickets; and $10 for 25 tickets. Three lucky winners are chosen each week; the first two tickets drawn win $5, the third winner draws a card from the deck in hopes of pulling an Ace to win a share of the pot. If a joker is pulled, it will cost the winner a $2 contribution to the pot. If the Ace of Spades is pulled, the pot is awarded equally to all who have pulled an Ace from the current deck, and the drawing starts over again.
