When Guy Gunner's name was pulled as the winner of a 2014 Ford Focus on Saturday, Oct. 25, he wasn't the only winner at Apple Ford-Lincoln: our entire community will benefit from the $49,000 raised in this year's Apple Valley Rotary raffle fundraiser.
Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland drew the winning tickets at the raffle celebration at Apple Valley Ford, which included live music and catering by Rascal's. Other raffle winners include Joanna Perkins, who won a gas grill (donated by Warners' Stellian) and Burnsville Rotarian Dick Manley, who took home $500 cash.

This year, the 49-member Rotary club sold 3,218 raffle tickets and netted $49,500 for the Apple Valley Rotary Foundation, exceeding last year’s total of $41,000. Since starting the fundraiser in 2006, approximately $260,000 has been raised. Every dime is given back to local community initiatives and Rotary International projects, such as defeating polio worldwide.
Apple Valley High School Booster Clubs, under the direction of Steve Degenaar, sold 593 raffle tickets and will share in proceeds from their sales, receiving $5,930.
Apple Valley Rotary undertakes many local service projects, including: distributing dictionaries to school children; providing college scholarships to high school kids; presenting annual Teacher of the Year recognition; highway clean-up; supporting Beyond the Yellow Ribbon; volunteering at the Lewis House and more. Apple Valley Rotarians Deliver 1,800 Dictionaries
Apple Valley Rotarians recently delivered personal dictionaries to more than 1,800 third grade students in ISD 196.
Per our annual tradition, earlier this year, 29 members of the Apple Valley Rotary Club presented free, 500-plus page dictionaries to third-grade students in the 15 elementary schools of District 196, which covers Apple Valley, Rosemount and Eagan, as well as to five church schools in the district. Each dictionary is labeled with a sticker stating Rotary's Four-Way Test.
Rotary members often hear from students that this is the first book they have owned into which they can write their name and keep forever.
Each dictionary costs about $2; funding for this project (and others) comes from the Apple Valley Rotary Scholarship Foundation, supported by the club's annual car raffle fundraiser.
Apple Valley Rotary Helps Fight Hunger
In March, Apple Valley Rotarians were proud to support the Minnesota Foodshare March Campaign, a food drive to benefit 300 food shelves across the state--including our local 360 Communities.
Our club collected boxes of food and cash donations at meetings on March 5 and March 19. The 47 club members donated a total $991 and the club chipped in $500 from its own funds, for a total of $1,491.
Thanks to help from groups like Apple Valley Rotary, 360 Communities was able to reach about one-third of their $75,000/75,000-pound goal within the first 20 days of the challenge.

Partnering with charitable groups.
Just this past month, 20 club members helped pack meals for Haiti at Feed my Starving Children in Eagan, and our club raised $72,000 for 360 Communities' Armful of Love holiday giving program.
Donating time and money to great causes.
In early December, we donated $2,000 to Toys 4 Military Kids--just one of more than a dozen local charities with whom we partner throughout each year.
Supporting our schools.
Each month of the school year, we celebrate several Students of the Month, which includes inviting them and their parents to join us for a regular meeting. We sent two high school students to Rotary’s Camp Enterprise, our STRIVE program meets with high school students monthly to help them discover their strengths and improve personal and academic achievement, and next month, we’re hosting our annual ethics workshop for high school students.
Keeping Apple Valley beautiful and safe.
This fall, we helped plant wildflowers in Alimagnet Park and cleaned up our “adopted” portion of McAndrews Road. We also cleared snowed-in fire hydrants, shown at right.
