Tim attended college at Augsburg and Mankato State University, earning a Bachelor's Degree. He graduated from the St. Paul Police Academy in 1980, receiving the "distinguished recruit" award after being selected for this honor by his classmates.He also returned to school by attending the University of St. Thomas and earning his Master's Degree in Public Safety Education and Administration in 1995.
Tim was promoted to Lieutenant at the St. Paul Police Department in 1995 and then to Senior to Commander of the Eastern District in 1999. He later served a Chief Finney's Chief of Staff and as the Senior Commander of the Central District. In 2003, Tim was appointed Assistant Commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Divisions he managed there include Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement, State Patrol, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, State Fire Marshal, and Homeland Security and Emergency Management. He also helped develop the $500 million state-wide radio system while chair of the Statewide Radio Board.
Tim was appointed Chief Deputy of the Dakota County Sheriff's Office in 2010, where he managed the day-to-day operations of the office and its $18 million budget.
In November Tim was elected Dakota County Sheriff. He assumed the office in Minnesota's third largest county on January 2015.
Tim and his wife Julie, live in Mendota Heights and have four children.

For the meeting of April 22, 2015 there are 41 cards and 2 Jokers. The pot stands at $242 +.
Ticket donations are: $1 for 1 ticket; $2 for 3 tickets; $5 for 10 tickets; and $10 for 25 tickets. Three lucky winners are chosen each week; the first two tickets drawn win $5, the third winner draws a card from the deck in hopes of pulling an Ace to win a share of the pot. If a joker is pulled, it will cost the winner a $2 contribution to the pot. If the Ace of Spades is pulled, the pot is awarded equally to all who have pulled an Ace from the current deck, and the drawing starts over again. David Kingsbury pulled the Ace of Diamonds on March 18th and is guaranteed at least 1/4 of the final pot.
