What's new this week?

Speaker:
Topic: Apple Valley Rotary Community Literacy Project

AV Rotary Community Literacy Project

By September 30th, 2015 our Apple Valley Rotarians will have collected over 4000 books to be distributed to children who need books in our community. At our regular meeting District 196 Superintendent Jane Berenz will say a few words about the Reading Recovery Program in ISD 196 and how the intervention program has helped the literacy level of first graders.

The English Learner (EL) Director of ISD 196 will accept the approximately 2000 books we have collected and discuss how the over 1600 EL students will use the books. Jan McCarty Plucker, the Director, has invited two English Learner (EL) Lead Teachers (Leah Soderlund and Jenny Leroux) who help support over 60 EL teachers in the district, to join us on September 30.th

Laura Gilkey, Director of head Start for Scott, Carver, and Dakota County will accept the over 2000 books we have collected for the Head Start Program. Head Start is a child development program that serves children from birth to age five years and their families. Head Start works closely with local school districts to provide early intervention services for children who need it. Laura will discuss what this donation means to Head Start.

A strong partnership has been formed as we collected books for this project with our local Saver’s store. Brooke Stein, the new manager, has been a very strong advocate for A.V. Rotary and the Community Literacy Project. She will talk about Saver’s philosophy of community involvement.

Before the books are distributed the Rotarians will have an opportunity to put a sticker noting that the book has been donated by the Apple Valley Rotary in the front cover of each book. This fun team activity will demonstrate to our guests that we are a “hands-on volunteer community group.”

ROTARY CLUB OF APPLE VALLEY BOARD MEETING

September 11, 2015

1. Call to order 7:30 AM

President Eva Cheney-Hatcher called the meeting of the Rotary Club of Apple Valley Board to order. Also present were Jari Hamlin, Lance Miller, Robert Braun, Patrick Selchow, Peter Theberath, Greg Higgins, Gwen Aaberg and Jessica Fields.

2. Treasurer’s Report: [submitted at a later date] Ed Corbett reports that we have the following balances in our accounts as of September 12, 2015:

Checking: $ 7,447.87

Savings: $12,100.38

3. Committee Reports:

Public Relations/Web Communications:

Eva reported that in conversations with Heather, she will be stepping down from this position due to her commitments at her new job, but will be accessible for any help that we may need. Eva would appreciate any suggestions from the club as to whom a replacement might be.

Fund Raising – Patrick Selchow

A lot of work still needs to be done concerning the car raffle. To date 657 tickets have been sold but this is comparable to this time last year. We need to get out there and sell tickets.

Drawing to be October 24th at 4 p.m. Starting at 1 p.m. food will be offered and also live music. Culvers, Rascals, etc. This will go until 3 p.m. Overall expenses for the raffle tend to come in at $20,000 including purchase of car. Steve Degennar will be having the high school students sell a certain amount of tickets with ½ of the proceeds going to the school. They normally sell 350 to 400.

Eva has decided to sell twenty extra tickets and credit for ten tickets each will be given to both Wayne Hilbert and Steve Mattson. She is asking other members to participate and match Eva’s challenge!

Jessica will put together a Google Calendar showing which other clubs are being visited for solicitation of raffle tickets. Gwen can put this information also in the weekly bulletin. First fund raising goal is the car raffle bringing in $49,000 but will be working on the possibility of a second fund raising project. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Vocational Services – Robert Braun

Strive/AVID will have its first class with Rotary attendance on September 24th at 7:30 a.m. Rotary members are going to be asked to participate with their time on occasion to talk about the history of Rotary and also to share their career experiences. “Interact” Eva and Robert have attended a high school faculty meeting to explain the creation of an Interact club within the student body to promote and perform community service. Robert will be speaking to the civics classes – student leadership and asking for 10 students that will be acting as the core group. Theresa Kuhn the teacher of the AVID program will be assisting in this endeavor. Steve Degennar will be asked to start working on a selection of two Senior or Junior students who will qualify and want to attend the annual “Camp Enterprise” trip scheduled for November 5th through the 7th. Funds for this trip have already been approved by the Rotary Foundation Board.

Student of the Month will start again this year making it the third year that we have provided this successful student achievement award for the Middle School students. The first presentation will be October 14th. The three middle schools are Scott Highlands, Falcon Ridge and Valley.

Community Service – Greg Higgins

Current projects: Adopt a Park, Feed my starving children, Farmer’s market produce rescue, Loaves & fishes. Members are wanting to find a BIG project with possibly using a bob cat! Loaves and Fishes wanting our club to commit to the 3rd Tuesday of every other month. Need to put together a schedule for the entire year. - e-mail blasts. Christmas shopping day will be December 7th with wrapping party to be December 9th. Rascals to again provide food. Also, warm hands, warm heads and warm hearts for this winter season. Make our volunteer work fun by having a social event following our hard work. Greg asked to track volunteer hours.

Membership – Bruce Nordquist

Eva reports that her goal for the year is to expand the face of Rotary in our community. When we do our community projects through the year we want to be sure to show we are Rotarians, whether it is wearing our shirts, talking about Rotary etc.  With expansion of community awareness it will bring interest in becoming a member of Rotary.

Millennial Engagement Director Jessica Fields

Continue to use the website to note upcoming events for Rotarians and non-Rotarians. Increase club's use of Facebook Visit Twin Cities Rotaract to see what they're doing to engage young people Get young people involved with our club (or our club involved with young people) on at least a monthly basis to increase awareness of Rotary among Millennials

Youth Exchange Director – Peter Theberath

Liz our exchange student from Brazil is doing quite well. She is getting involved with school activities: soccer, dancing, etc. She had graduated already from high school in Brazil. Language skills are limited – Peter working with that situation. She has been set up with a cell phone. “Parent Portal”

Sergeant at Arms – Lance Miller

Taking over Wayne’s duties with regard to scheduling the Speaker of the Week and member’s obligation to provide a speaker. Any questions need to be directed to Lance. Lance will be putting the schedules both on the website and the weekly bulletin. He will show the schedule of monthly board meetings. We will meet December 23rd but not December 30th.

4. President’s report:

International Convention was attended by Eva and was a truly wonderful experience. Next year’s convention will be in Seoul South Korea. President elect has the opportunity attend the Districts President Elect Training (PET) conference to prepare for their year as President. Eva said it would have been beneficial to her if she had attended the previous year as Secretary because you should already be preparing for your year as President before you even attend PET. Eva is suggested that we sponsor the Secretary along with the President elect to attend this annual conference. A motion was made, seconded and approved by the board to have the Secretary attend next year’s conference.

Eva’s goals for the coming year:

Getting organized and moving forward.

Get the face of Rotary out to the community

We are a gift to the community – a gift to the world!

The board meeting minutes will be electronically approved by the Board via e-mail and then put into the bulletin each month. The next board meeting will be Friday, October 9th, 2015. Please put it on your calendar.

It was moved, seconded and approved to adjourn at 8:35.

Respectfully submitted by Jari Hamlin
