What's new this week?

Speaker: Timothy Evans

Topic: Ronald McDonald House

Timothy Evans currently works as a Local Government Management Fellow in Dakota County, through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).  As a Fellow and previously with the National League Cities in Washington DC, he continues to work on a variety of social, economic, and systemic issues that impact local governments across the nation.  Further, Timothy’s experiences motivate him to help local governments navigate the challenging political and economic realities of today.  Coupled with his local government experiences, passion, and education through Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, Timothy brings a comprehensive understanding of the challenges that face our education system.  Supporting his comprehensive understanding of education are his years of experience in the DC public schools, through Teach For America, his educationally focus work in the non-profit sector (nationally/internationally), and his graduate teaching degree from American University.  He utilizes his diverse range of experiences to help local governments gain a holistic view of a policy’s impact on the respective community.  Timothy seeks to exercise his knowledge to help communities nationally understand the various connections and impacts of policies and environmental changes.   Through his passion and experiences, he is working to provide actionable steps for local governments to build thriving communities.

Way to go, Sharon!

Congratulations Apple Valley Rotarian (and Past-President) Sharon LaComb on being named one of Dakota County’s 2015 Exceptional Businesswomen by the Dakota Tribune and Sun ThisWeek!

The honor celebrates women who “go the extra mile” to make a difference, both their profession and in the communities in which they live and work.

Sharon is a former teacher, Apple Valley City Councilwoman and vice president of Dakota County Technical College. As Apple Valley Rotarians know, she is also a gifted fundraiser and organizer of our annual raffle. Click here to read an article Bill Tschol wrote about Sharon for Sun ThisWeek in 2011.

Sharon and her fellow Exceptional Businesswomen will be honored at a recognition breakfast at 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Holiday Inn in Lakeville. Tickets are available; $25 per person or fill a table for $175.

Open your home... and your heart

Apple Valley Rotary is gearing up to host a Rotary Youth Exchange student, starting this August, and we're looking for three host families for the 2015-16 school year.

As a host family, you are expected to:
  • provide room and board for up to three months.
  • supervise the student just as you would your own children.
  • involve the student in family activities and chores.
  • enrich the exchange experience by including the student in family and community activities.
The Apple Valley Rotary Club pays for all school lunches and other routine school expenses and provides the exchange student with a small amount of financial support each month. Our host families must reside within the boundaries of ISD 196 and work as a coordinated team to provide homes for the school year. Students typically attend Apple Valley High School.

If you are ready to sign up to be a host family or if you have further questions, please connect with either Peter Therberath or Tom Lawell ASAP.  We need to inform the Rotary District of our willingness to host an exchange student by Jan. 30.

Feb 4 Weekly Raffle Update

For the meeting of Jan 28, 2015 there are 42 cards and 2 Jokers. The pot stands at $330 +.

Ticket donations are: $1 for 1 ticket; $2 for 3 tickets; $5 for 10 tickets; and $10 for 25 tickets. Three lucky winners are chosen each week; the first two tickets drawn win $5, the third winner draws a card from the deck in hopes of pulling an Ace to win a share of the pot.  If a joker is pulled, it will cost the winner a $2 contribution to the pot.  If the Ace of Spades is pulled, the pot is awarded equally to all who have pulled an Ace from the current deck, and the drawing starts over again. Ed Corbett pulled the Ace of Diamonds on January 14th and is guaranteed at least 1/4 of the final pot.
