What's new this week?

Speaker: Terra Peterson

Topic: Ronald McDonald House

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children. Guiding us in our mission are our core values:
  • Focusing on the critical needs of children.
  • Celebrating the diversity of our people and programs
  • Valuing our heritage.
  • Operating with accountability and transparency.
We believe when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community and, ultimately, the world.
As pioneers of providing family-centered care, RMHC strives to be part of the solution in improving the lives of children and their families, providing programs that strengthen families during difficult times.

In 2014, we launched the three-year “RMHC Impact Strategy,” with a goal to serve one million more children and their families per year. This strategy not only builds on our success over the last 40 years, but also gives us the foundation to be stronger and more efficient than ever.
In order to do this, we are focusing on three strategic priorities:
  • Expanding our reach by both creating and growing existing programs - including Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms
  • Strengthening our global network through staff development and education, and ensuring the financial sustainability of RMHC and its Chapters around the world
  • Mobilizing support to increase the understanding of RMHC programs; thereby allowing us to support more children and families around the world

We honored three great local students Jan. 21
At our Jan. 21 meeting, we celebrated three outstanding Students of the Month (pictured below, from left): Isabelle Vevea from Falcon Ridge Middle School, Amanda Jackson from Valley Middle School and Elisa Asani from Scott Highlands Middle School.

Congratulations to these three outstanding young ladies!

Open your home... and your heart

Apple Valley Rotary is gearing up to host a Rotary Youth Exchange student, starting this August, and we're looking for three host families for the 2015-16 school year.

As a host family, you are expected to:
  • provide room and board for up to three months.
  • supervise the student just as you would your own children.
  • involve the student in family activities and chores.
  • enrich the exchange experience by including the student in family and community activities.
The Apple Valley Rotary Club pays for all school lunches and other routine school expenses and provides the exchange student with a small amount of financial support each month. Our host families must reside within the boundaries of ISD 196 and work as a coordinated team to provide homes for the school year. Students typically attend Apple Valley High School.

If you are ready to sign up to be a host family or if you have further questions, please connect with either Peter Therberath or Tom Lawell ASAP.  We need to inform the Rotary District of our willingness to host an exchange student by Jan. 30.

Jan. 28 Weekly Raffle Update

For the meeting of Jan 28, 2015 there are 43 cards and 2 Jokers. The pot stands at $330.

Ticket donations are: $1 for 1 ticket; $2 for 3 tickets; $5 for 10 tickets; and $10 for 25 tickets. Three lucky winners are chosen each week; the first two tickets drawn win $5, the third winner draws a card from the deck in hopes of pulling an Ace to win a share of the pot.  If a joker is pulled, it will cost the winner a $2 contribution to the pot.  If the Ace of Spades is pulled, the pot is awarded equally to all who have pulled an Ace from the current deck, and the drawing starts over again. Ed Corbett pulled the Ace of Diamonds on January 14th and is guaranteed at least 1/4 of the final pot.
