Looking to expand your Rotary horizon? Make global connections with two exciting opportunities:
  1. Our club is still looking for host families for a 2015-16 exchange student. Each family will host the student for 3 months during the school year (starting in August). Families should live within Dist. 196, preferably near Apple Vally High School, or be able to provide consistent transportation to the school. Most of the students' expenses are paid for by Rotary or his/her family, though the host families provide food.

  2. Several international Friendship Exchange trips are being planned by Dist. 5950, including:
  • A two-week trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and surrounding areas, led by Amanda Ottman, is being planned for Oct. 10-24, 2015 or Feb. 6-20, 2016.
  • An 11-day trip to Taiwan, March 12 - 23, conducted thru the Rotary International Travel fellowship.
  • A trip to India March 6-22. Visit Dist. 5950-funded projects at the Nari Gunja girls' school near Patna, the International Village Clinic near Varanasi and Hyderabad/Bangalore. The group will also tour New Delhi, Agra/(Taj Mahal) and Mumbai.

Way to go, Sharon!

Congratulations Apple Valley Rotarian (and Past-President) Sharon LaComb on being named one of Dakota County’s 2015 Exceptional Businesswomen by the Dakota Tribune and Sun ThisWeek! Sharon and her fellow Exceptional Businesswomen were honored at a recognition breakfast Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Holiday Inn in Lakeville. Thirteen Apple Valley Rotarians were there to show support for a strong member of our club.

Sharon is a former teacher, Apple Valley City Councilwoman and vice president of Dakota County Technical College. As Apple Valley Rotarians know, she is also a gifted fundraiser and organizer of our annual raffle.

What's new this week?

Wednesday's Speaker: Rand Whillock
Topic: Robots and STEM's

Rand, a teacher of industrial robotics at Normandale Community College, has coached and mentored First Lego League (FLL) robotics teams for 15 years, most recently volunteering as a mentor for inner city Minneapolis school teams. A creative inventor, Rand holds 11 patents with 14 others pending.

It's Food Shelf Wednesday: The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign is here! Help 360 Communities raise $75,000 and collect 75,000 pounds of food in March. This month is a great time to increase the impact of your donation with 360 Communities' network of five food shelves in Apple Valley, Burnsville, Farmington, Lakeville and Rosemount. When you donate to our food shelves this month, we will qualify for additional funds from Minnesota FoodShare!

March 4 Weekly Raffle Update

For the meeting of March  4, 2015 there are 48 cards and 2 Jokers. The pot stands at $103.

Ticket donations are: $1 for 1 ticket; $2 for 3 tickets; $5 for 10 tickets; and $10 for 25 tickets. Three lucky winners are chosen each week; the first two tickets drawn win $5, the third winner draws a card from the deck in hopes of pulling an Ace to win a share of the pot.  If a joker is pulled, it will cost the winner a $2 contribution to the pot.  If the Ace of Spades is pulled, the pot is awarded equally to all who have pulled an Ace from the current deck, and the drawing starts over again.
